What the Official Sources Say

  • Registered businesses must file VAT returns of taxable sales and purchases for each VAT period; the return shows the net VAT position.
  • Returns are filed online through the NBR eServices Portal.
  • If the NBR does not receive a return within the filing period it may estimate the return under Article 36 of the VAT law (Decree-Law No. 48 of 2018).
  • Outstanding VAT can be paid online via the VAT Bill Payment Service or Fawateer.

In Practice

What This Means for Your ERP

  • Provide a return report that totals taxable sales and purchases and the net VAT for a chosen period.
  • Add a period calendar per taxpayer; take the period length and due dates from the NBR, not hard-coded defaults.
  • Keep an export file or screen aligned to the NBR portal return boxes.
